More about Octopus Energy
What’s the cheapest Octopus Energy tariff?
One of the great things about Octopus is they have quite a few tariffs to choose from!
I’m on the Octopus Tracker tariff. This has a daily variable kWh rate for gas & electricity, but I’ve always found it to be cheaper than their fixed rate.
9 out of 10 Octopus customers pay less with on their standard tariff than they could with any other large energy supplier.
What happens after I switch to Octopus?
The first step is to sign up via my referral link, so you’ll get £50 free credit.
When clicking through, you’ll be taken to their quote system. Select your usage level, or enter your exact kWh usage for gas & electricity if you want a more accurate quote.
You’ll usually be switched within a few days, and there’s no effect on your gas or electricity supply. No engineer visit or changes your meter – it’s incredibly simple actually.
Then after you’ve been with them for a month (so they can see you’re a genuine customer), you’ll have £50 free credit added to your balance! ????
Are there any Octopus Energy cashback deals?
Octopus aren’t on any cashback sites like Quidco or TopCashback – you’ve already found the best new customer deal with £50 free credit (I promise!).
Once signed up, you’ll then get your own unique referral link so can refer friends/family and split £100 with them too.
How popular are Octopus Energy?
As of April 2024, Octopus Energy are the UK’s largest energy supplier for electricity and gas.
Despite only being founded in 2018, they’ve experienced massive growth. You’re definitely not alone in wanting to switch to Octopus Energy –
How good is their customer service?
Octopus have been a Which? Recommended Supplier for 7 years running now, including in January 2024.
Rated 4.8/5 on Trustpilot, with over 370,000 reviews, it’s fair to say they’re one of the best.
I’ve emailed them a few times ([email protected]), and response times have been the same day, even over weekends.
When calling, you’ll get through to UK-based customer service which is getting rarer these days. While their phone support is only open 9-5, Monday to Friday, as I mentioned – they’re contactable via email over weekends.
You can read more about their customer service here – https://octopus.energy/customer-service-rankings.
Do Octopus Energy offer discounts or credits for elderly and vulnerable customers?
With their £30m Octo Assist Fund, each year they support those most at need.
For 2024, they’re be providing discretionary £50, £100 or £200 credits to pensioners who don’t receive pension credit.
If you’re struggling to pay bills, you can also apply for financial support, waived standing charges, and even a free electric blanket! Put simply, I was amazed how much Octopus genuinely care for their customers.
As part of the Warmer Home Discount, Octopus Energy will be automatically giving £150 credit to eligible energy customers.
Can they help me save energy?
You’d think an energy supplier would want you to use as much as possible to maximise their profits, but Octopus aren’t your usual supplier!
Their website is packed with energy-saving tips and advice.
You can even join the waitlist to loan a thermal imaging camera absolutely free – including return postage. Once it arrives, link it to your phone and you’ll have around a week to check how thermally insulated your home is.

Yes, once signed up you can add yourself to their Priority Services Register, for extra support and notifications.
Can I refer my friends and family once signed up?
Absolutely! Once signed up, scroll down to the bottom of your dashboard and you’ll see

Octopus Energy Tariff Comparison
One of the great things about Octopus is they have quite a few to choose from – when I checked in Sept 2024 to put this guide together, there were over 10 tariff options.
I’m on the Octopus Tracker tariff. This has a daily variable kWh rate for gas & electricity, but I’ve always found it to be cheaper than their fixed rate.
Octopus 15m Fixed
This is fixed kWh unit rate tariff for 15 months. Ideal if you want stability knowing your unit rate will be the same each month.
–
Flexible Octopus
Gives you a fixed daily rate which is updated every 3 months. A good combination of a fixed rate but without locking in for 15 months.
–
Octopus Tracker (Britain’s fairest energy tariff)
I love this tariff, I switched to it when joining a few years ago. There was a waiting list for this new tariff at the time, but now you can get switched quickly!
If you’re happy to have daily ups and downs in kWh rates, you’ll find overall your bills are the cheapest compared to any other tariffs here. Over the last year, I’ve had daily electricity rates from £0.10-0.22/kWh.
Note the rates here are just a daily example:
–
Agile Octopus
If you want to save money when demand is lower and can easily shift usage to those times, this tariff has energy rates set daily in advance, but different rates every 30 minutes through the day.
–
Octopus Go
If you’ve got a Tesla or other electric EV vehicle, this is a great tariff. Simply set your car to charge between 00:30 and 05:30 each night and you’ll only pay £0.085/kWh. That’d equate to just £6.37 for a full 0-100% charge if you’ve got a Tesla Y for example.
–
Intelligent Octopus Go
Similar to the standard Octopus Go tariff, but can adjust your car’s charging schedule to be the cheaper hours overnight.
–
Intelligent Octopus Flux Import
An ideal option if you’ve got solar panels and battery storage.
–
Cosy Octopus
This is a heat pump tariff. You’ll see from the daily rate schedule below, you’ll save money if you can set your heat pump to run during off-peak periods.
–
Aira Flexible
This is a heat pump tariff with kWh rates fixed every 3 months.
–
Aira Zero
Another heat pump tariff option.
–
Octopus Key and Card
If you’re in a situation where you pre-pay for gas & electric with a key/card meter, this is the tariff you’ll be on.
